Prior to admission of in-coming new students,Hiroshima Women’s University carried out a questionnaire on their information literacy and assessed their typing ability for placement. Our university analyzed the correlation between the results of the questionnaire and typing test, and their first year grades for their Information Literacy class. The result shows that students in the basic class significantly improved their knowledge and typing ability in a year. It is highly likely that placing students in classes according to ability will improve their learning outcomes.  A more effective way of measuring students’ knowledge and ability should also be developed
