A practical production technology for 5-aminolevulnic acid (ALA) using the photosynthetic bacteria, Rhodobacter sphaeroides was developed using anaerobic digestion liquor of swine discharges, mandarin orange peels and sewage sludge. Using simple equipment, maximum ALA concentrations of 4.2 mM, 9.2 mM, 16 mM, respectively, were recycled, produced from the wastes held in anaerobic light (5 klux) condition. In order to adapt the process to the scale of industrial mass production, the production technology was then transferred to Cosmo Oil Company, Ltd. Here the process was further developed by means of (1) creating multiple photosynthetic bacterial mutants, and (2) improving the methods of fermentation. By controlling levels of dissolved oxygen in the culture medium, a maximum ALA concentration of 72 mM was produced industrially within an aerobic dark condition using a CR-720 strain mutant. Compared with ALA production by means of genetic manipulated Eschelichia coli and chemical synthesis, this form of production technology proved to be most excellent. ALA applications to biosynthesis, physiological activity and other agricultural and medical fields are summarized. For example, in agricultural fields, ALA growth promoting effects and salt tolerance ― including anti-stress activities of plants ― are described. In human physiology, the wide assortment of ALA medical applications are summarized and include (1) early diagnosis of cancer and cancer treatment; (2) allergy treatment for pollen and other anti-bodies; (3) treatment for diabetes; and (4) anti-aging effects.
