Sodium polyacrylate (SPA) has been successfully applied to effectively remove Cu2+ ions from the waste water. Terminal group (–COO–) in the SPA showed high Cu2+-removal capability for the waste-water purification. In case of 40 mL of 0.4 M Cu2+ solution, the removal was complete in 3 h when 2-6 g of SPA was applied for. All the experimental results showed that one gram of SPA could successfully remove 140-330 mg of Cu2+ ions, depending on the total amount of SPA and the pH of waste water. It proved that SPA be a powerful “environmental material”.
