Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) is noted as a political opportunist or,to be more exact,a partisan opportunist in eighteenth-century political circles. He drastically changed sides from the Whigs to the Tories in 1710,when Robert Harley,1st Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer (1661-1724),employed him as chief journalist for his propaganda scheme to back up the policies of his moderate Tory ministry.
