Atopic dermatitis is an allergy caused by the influence of various factors. Previous studies suggested that adult patients with atopic dermatitis suffered distress caused by their condition in their daily life, but very few studies have reported about distress among those in childhood or early adolescence. In this study, we interviewed four youths who suffered from atopic dermatitis in childhood or early adolescence. We analyzed the data by the Modified Grounded Theory Approach, focusing on the contents and changes of distress. As a result, it became clear that atopic dermatitis patients in childhood had sensitive skin by nature. This prevented them from managing the disease, and the bad relationship between medical staff and child patients could be one cause of distress. In addition, it was shown that their distress was reduced not only with the improvement of the symptoms, but also by support at home or in the hospitalor school, and good relationships between child patients and the people around them.
