Study into inclusive education-related course in the teacher training - Findings in paper-based questionnaire survey of students in general education

Akita University created a new course titled "Theories in Inclusive Education" as a requisite in theDepartment of School Education in FY2014. A paper-based questionnaire survey was conducted on the studentswho are not in the Course for Special Needs Education Teachers (students in general education) but took thecourse, both at the start and the end of the course. Comparison of findings at the start and at the end shows a rise inknowledge and interest in disabilities and persons with disabilities and in learning incentive regarding thesesubjects. Motivation to acquire teaching certificate for a special needs education schools also grew. Furthermore,results suggest that the course achieved a measure of success in realizing its goals of imparting greaterunderstanding of the distinctive features of disabilities and support required, cultivating awareness towarddevelopment of an "inclusive society" and increasing understanding toward inclusive education and special needseducation. Regarding the course improvement and issues that require actions, the needs were found in buildingunderstanding toward disabilities with greater sense of reality, attention to prevent creating fixed perceptions,enrichment of support chiefly in development problems in concrete terms, analytic assessment and review of thecourse content, approach to be taken toward acquisition of a teaching certificate, and follow-up surveys.
