Clarification of Terms that Indicate Interactions between School Staff and Parents

The objective of this study is to clarify the terms that indicate the forms of interactions between school staff and parents by differentiating 3 terms: parent interview, reacting to parents, and parent support. Based on a domestic literature review that included 22 articles on “parent interview”, 30 articles on “reacting to parents”, and 12 articles on “parent support”, the specific characteristics of these 3 terms have been clarified. It has also become clear that the 2 terms of “parent interview” and “reacting to parents” contain the element of having supportive interactions with parents, which falls under the definition of parent support. Under the circumstances where collaborations between school staff and parents are regarded as increasingly important, the clarification of the concept of parent support is necessary. The results of this study provide the necessary indications for defining parent support, i.e., supportive interactions with parents.
