Protective and Coping Factors Associated with Helplessness among Junior High School Students

This study sought to investigate the protective and coping factors associated with a feeling of helplessness among junior high school students in terms of development and grade factors. Using data collected from three surveys, verified the helplessness model by three grades. The model of third grade confirmed the pass: contingent experiences (time 1) → coping efficacy (time 2) → helplessness (time 3). On the other hand, the model of first and second grade didn't demonstrate the direct effect from coping efficacy (time 2) to helplessness (time 3). In addition, the model of first and third grade demonstrated the pass: biased thoughts about teachers, peer relationships, and oneself (time 2) → biased thoughts about academic work (time 2) → helplessness (time 3). However in the model of second grade the direct effect to helplessness (time 3) was found to be biased thoughts about oneself. These results suggested the protective and coping factors associated with a feeling of helplessness were different among three grades because of development and grades factors.
