Acceptance of self and others in high school students (N=760) was examined in relation to levels of parental support using a questionnaire composed of five-point Likert items. Parental support included child-parent conversation frequency, level of empathy, and level of understanding. Results indicated that self-acceptance and acceptance of others correlated with parent-child conversation frequency and perceived levels of empathy and understanding. We found out that the different feature is judged from the distinction of sex of the child and combination with a father and a mother. Although in Japan the mother is traditionally viewed as being primarily responsible for raising children, these findings suggest that fathers can contribute much to a child’s sense of well-being and ability to form relationships with others.
