This research aims to compare 15 science textbooks published by five Japanese publishers for the first to third year middle school classes to those published by two Singapore publishers for the first and second year middle school classes. It intends to clarify any difference in descriptions about the relationship between teaching contents and daily life or social activity. An analysis of the results indicates as follows: 1)The Japanese textbooks allocate a significantly larger percentage of space statistically than their counterpart to the contents that describe application of science and technology, and appreciation of scientific doctrine and law. 2)On the other hand, they use a significantly smaller percentage of space for the contents describing application of scientific doctrine and law, social and ethical issues, and application of scientific skills. 3)There is no significant difference between the Japanese and Singapore textbooks as to the percentage of space assigned to describe the relationship between man and the environment, appreciation of the ecology, and contribution to the development of scientific knowledge.
