Use of HVPT in CALL to assess less successfully recognized phonemes for Japanese EFL learners This study investigated what English phonemes Japanese EFL learners are weak to recognizeamong 20 consonants and 10 vowels. Fourteen Japanese university students played the gameof phoneme recognition task with “English Accent Coach” website (Thomson, 2017) for twomonths in self-paced manner outside the classroom. The results showed the phonemes thatare difficult to recognize are supported by Speech Learning Model (Fledge, 1995) . Theinstructional concept beyond minimal pairs is discussed.
