Novel styrene and acrylamide monomers bearing with dansyl group were synthesized and polymerized under conventional radical polymerization conditions. The fluorescent spectra of these monomers and the corresponding polymers were investigated in a variety of solvent to elucidate their fluorosolvatochromic properties. It was found that the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state for the hydrophobic polystyrene derivative was stabilized in non-polar solvents in comparison with the styrene monomer. This results suggested that the hydrophobic interaction betweenpolymer main chain and solvent may affect the solvation of dansyl groups at side chain to lead the fluorosolvatochromic property. On the other hand, the stabilization of ICT state was observed for the polyacrylamide random copolymer in Et2O, suggesting the effect of polar tBA comonomer.Key Words : fluorosolvatochromism, dansyl groups, tert-butyl acrylate, radical copolymerization
