In a centrifugal impeller, the most dominant secondary flow is related to the passage vortex. The formation of the passage vortex is produced by the deflected flow of the low momentum fluid on the solid walls, such as the blade surfaces and the endwalls, induced by the pressure gradient on the passage cross-section. The pressuregradient is influenced by the Rossby number which means the relative strength of the centrifugal force caused by the curvature of impeller passage to the Coriolis force by the impeller rotation.In the present study, the flow within the rotating curved duct which was related to the impeller passage was analyzed numerically in order to investigate the influences of the spanwise and pitchwise distributions of the inlet velocity, which were related to the operating condition of the impeller, on the generation of passage vortex and the associated loss generation.
