Rousseau’s writings contain a variety of examples of women’s sacrifice, such as Lucrèce, Julie, Lévite’s wife, Axa and Sophie. Their sacrifices bring about a change in the circumstances of the community to which they belong. With these sacrifices as turning points, a community is formed or changed. From this perspective, women can be considered pivotal, so it is curious that Rousseau makes no mention of women’s role in the community in The Social Contract. Women also play a role in the community. Analyzing Rousseau’s texts concerning women and women’s sacrifice, I would like to elucidate the correlation between the formation of a community and women’s sacrifice in Rousseau’s ideas.
