Two types of quarter-wave plates using a periodic hole array in a metallic plate are analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with the periodic boundary condition. The plate consisting of periodic triangular holes exhibits counter-circular-polarization characteristics, i.e., theincident light can be changed from linear to right- or left-handed circular polarization at different wavelengths. The plate consisting of periodic rectangular holes acts as an efficient polarization converter over a wide wavelength range of λ = 1.05 ∼ 1.30 µm with a high transmittance of morethan 61%.Key Words : quarter-wave plate, periodic structure, finite-difference time-domain method
