This paper investigates how persuasive ‘Introductions’ are developed in research articles that are published in competitive journals. A considerable number of studies have been conducted on the rhetorical strategy of move analysis. However, only a few attempts have been made to describe in detail the vocabulary and phrases used in individual moves. This study conducts a qualitative investigation of a representative group of 102 research papers in the social, human, and natural sciences. The results of this corpus data analysis indicate that there are specific ways to develop persuasive discourse in each move, which could enhance effective negotiation with academic authorities.
