ACTIVATION MECHANISM OF STRAIN RATE EFFECT ON STRENGTH AND INITIAL STIFFNESS OF SATURATED CONCRETE

Uniaxial compression tests and bending tests were conducted with different loading rates in order to investigate the strain rate effect on concrete. Increases of lateral strains were observed with clear strain rate effect under high loading rate compression tests only for the saturated specimens. In addition, increases of tensile strength of saturated RC specimen under high loading rate were clearly observed in bending tests. Furthermore, saturation after drying process seemed to develop strain rate effect of bending test. These results suggested that both positive water pressure in micro pore and negative water pressure in micro cracks possibly activate strain rate effect on structural concrete.
