During 2013-2014, several diseases were found on medicinal plants at the Tokyo Metropolitan Medicinal Plant Botanical Garden, in Japan. I isolated two different fungi from unknown stem rot diseases on nine plant species, belonging to eight families. Inoculation tests with the two fungi were undertaken and confirmed their pathogenicity. Based on morphological and rDNA sequence data, the two fungi were identified as Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii. These symptoms were the first record in Japan.In 2012, stem rot caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex was found on Cinnamomum verum in Kanagawa, Japan. The pathogenicity of the fungus was confirmed with inoculation tests. Similarities of rDNA-ITS (Internal transcribed spacer), TUB2 (β-tubulin 2), ACT (actin) and CAL (calmodulin) domain sequences revealed that the pathogenic fungus was Colletotrichum siamense, belonging to C.gloeosporioides species complex. I proposed the name ‘Anthracnose’ (Tanso-byo in Japanese) for the disease herein.
