Description
Upon the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (F1NPP) accident caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, radioactive materials were poured down on farmlands as well. The accumulation of the radioactive materials in the soil and the subsequent incorporation into the crops became a problem. To remove the radioactive materials in the soil and inhibit the absorption into the crops, I planned to grow inedible plants as cover plants before the cultivation of the crops. In this study, I examined the effect of Italian ryegrass as a cover plant for decontamination and inhibition of the uptake of the radioactive materials into vegetables. The results obtained suggested that while it was very difficult to remove the radioactive materials by cultivation of cover plants, some inhibitory effects may be expected on the absorption into crops.
