PREPARATION OF SiC-BASED POROUS COMPOSITES FROM SiC CORE/ ZrSiO4 SHELL PARTICLE AND HIGH-TEMPERATURE OXIDATION BEHAVIOR OF THE COMPOSITES

To improve the oxidation resistance of SiC-based porous composites, SiC powder covered with ZrSiO4 shell was prepared by a sol-gel route, formed into powder compact, and fired at 1500 ℃ for 3 h. Since the formation of ZrSiO4 was difficult even by the sol-gel route and subsequent high-temperature firing, the addition of Ni(NO3)2・6H2O, as a source of Ni, in the precursor solution was attempted to promote the ZrSiO4 formation. The Ni addition was effective to elabolate the SiC-ZrSiO4 porous composites with the relative density of 4.07 m2/g, the brinell hardness of 24 HBS 3/1, and greater thermal oxidation resistance than that of the SiC-ZrSiO4 porous composites without Ni addition.
