A polarization converter using a periodic array of metallic elements is analyzed using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with the periodic boundary condition. First, the wavelength characteristics are evaluated using L-shaped metallic elements. Next, consideration is given to the effects of arm length and arm width of the L-shaped elements on the transmittance. It is found that there exists a trade-off between the transmittance and the ellipticity characteristics.
