EFFECT OF OBLIQUE IMPACT OF STEEL BALL ON LAYER DELAMINATION OF CFRP LAMINATES UNDER LOW TEMPERATURES

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) is one of composite materials. It is used for industrial components because of light weight, excellent in strength, stiffness and a corrosion-resistant. However, CFRP have the problem causing a delamination between layers by the impact. Invisible delaminates may cause a great accident. In this study, a relationship between collision speed and delamination area of CFRP laminates was investigated. The impact tests that detect the effect of impact angles and low temperatures on the layer delamination area of CFRP laminate are made using an air-gun system and incubator. Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM) is utilized for detecting the delamination area of CFRP laminates. The residual strength of the specimen being damaged is also examined by using three point bending device. In the low-temperatures, thermal stress generated at each layer and the interface of each layer. Therefore, delamination area was increased as compared to the room temperature.
