Home science education in India is not well known in Japan. Ms. Ota, one of the authors of this paper, obtained the home science textbook Home Science, used by high school students in India. The purpose of this paper is to help understand the status of home science education in India, by using the textbook Home Science (Janaki Kameswaran et al. (2004-2005) higher secondary first year, higher secondary second year, Tamilnadu Textbook Corporation). For this purpose, we translate the textbook written in English into Japanese, analyze the contents, and understand the status, goal and method of home science education in India. From its Unit 1 : Concept of Home Science, the beginning of Home Science, we obtained some information about the history, roles, extension education, etc. of home science in India. We understood that home science education in India started as an aspect of agriculture education, and developed not only in formal education, but also in extension education for women and girls.
