As an attempt to explore the difference of usage between two emphatic constructions in modem Chinese, shi (是) ···VO de (的) and shi (是) · · · V de (的) 0, this paper analyses their use as found in the novels of two famous authors, Lao She and Wang Shuo, who wrote in the colloquial Beijing dialect. Following past research by the present author, this paper is mainly concerned with three aspects: focus of narration, predicative verbs, and noun objects. This study has arrived at the following results. First, there are significant differences between the two constructions when the focus of narration is location or way in Lao She's novels; however, there is no significant difference between the two constructions in Wang Shuo's novels. Second, in colloquial novels by both authors, polysyllabic verbs tend to appear in the construction shi (是) ···VO de (的), while monosyllabic verbs tend to appear in the construction shi (是) · · · V de (的) 0. Third, in both colloquial novels, personal pronouns strongly tend to appear as O (bject) in the construction shi (是) ···VO de (的), while common nouns strongly tend to appear in the construction shi (是) ··· V de (的) 0. While this evidence has been pointed out by previous studies, a new finding of this study is that personal pronouns can appear in the construction shi (是) ·· · V de (的) 0.
