The purpose of the present study was to examine how the image of the father in students changes through contact with men during child-rearing. We administered a questionnaire in the way of free writing. We analyzed the data using a modified grounded theory approach. The results illustrated the following process. The students’ image of the father had formed in their childhood mainly based on their fathers; they then discovered and found new aspects of their fathers through contact with fathers during child-rearing. By uniting the original image of the father in childhood with the new image, they were able to reconstruct their image of the father. By “changing the image of the father”, the students recalled their relationship with their fathers and imagined that they would be a father in the future, thereby furthering the “construct of the father model”. The results indicated that changing the image of the father through our project played an important part in the preparation for being a father. Further, giving an opportunity for contacts with men during child-rearing to men before they became fathers was an effective support.
