The present study aimed to suggest the factors that explain the aging paradox of loneliness by reviewing studies from these approaches, attachment theory, gerontological theories, and preference of solitude.Attachment theory research indicated that attachment style relates with emotional loneliness and stabilizes with aging. However.,this approach is not suitable for explaining social loneliness among older adults. Next, the author focused on some gerontological theories, especially Selective Optimization with Compensation. These theories suggested that older adults should adapt to the reduction in their social networks and limitations in social resources by using“primary control strategy” and‘secondary control strategy".Although previous research has explored the former in detail, the latter type of strategies needs to be explored further using other approaches. Finally, studies on solitude supported the assertion taat secondary control strategy should relate to preference for solitude as the ability to remain alone comfortable. Future studies should attempt to construct a model of aging development by including secondary control strategies
