This article focuses on effective learning through international internships. Internships are a relatively recent phenomenon where many public sector departments such as the Ministries of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Health, Labour and Welfare and Economy, Trade and Industry all support and encourage both undergraduate and postgraduate students undergoing internship. On the other hand, this practise has not yet gathered momentum in Japanese universities. One contributing factor for this may be due to the fact that the assessment of internship remains difficult and its effectiveness in learning is not well-recognised. This article proposes a hypothesis that self-assessment in international internships takes on an effective role rather than relative assessment. In addition, self-assessment also makes individual students motivated i.e. self-assessment may create self-motivation effectively.
