This paper presents a modeling method to estimate the wind drift currents in lakes. Galerkin's finite element method is used to get discrete basic equations for flows, shape functions adopted are determined on the basis of the utilization efficiency of computer and the boundary conditions, and coefficients of horizontal eddy viscosity are determined as a function of mesh scale on physical bases. The numerical solutions on the wind drift currents in Lake Nojiri by this modeling method approximately coincide with the observation results on the movements of floats on the lake, so it is considered that the modeling method presented here can be used to forecast the currents in the lakes.
