'Informality' is a character of the ombudsman. Recently, ombudsmen have been aiming to handle complaints easier, quicker and cheaper and some researchers say it is a type of ADR and others say 'informal resolution'. In addition, there is a trend of proactive role of the ombudsman, which is publishing the guideline and implementing training for achieving 'good administration'. This article considers these areas of the role of the ombudsman as informal role, and discusses that it will be more important for achieving good administration in the public sector.
