"New Devotion" is one of the influential and primary factors leading Japanese Christians to refusing apostasy and choosing martyrdom, having been inspired by the spirituality of St Francis of Assisi, who obeyed Christ completely and had deep empathy for the Passion of Jesus. The movement for beatification emphasizes the significance today of the faith St Francis showed in obeying Christ thoroughly, and in considering Gospel values more greatly than secular values.
