This essay examines how kindergartens engaged in aerial defense in Japan during wartime (1937-1945).\In particular, this paper teases out the journals (nisshi) at the Kindergarten attached to the Tokyo\Women’s Higher Normal School.\ The analysis shows that the kindergarten’s aerial defense went through four stages, from its\beginning (September, 1937 - March, 1942) to its development (April, 1942 - May, 1944), to its\transformation (May, 1944 - October, 1944), and, finally, to its ending (November, 1944 - March, 1945).\In each stage, the kindergarten responded to the various policies at both national and municipal levels\and to the increasing degree of perceived danger of potential and actual aerial attacks.\ We see a great deal of commitment by the kindergarten to protecting the children by many means\at its discretion. Although, ultimately, it failed to provide its children with spiritual well-being and\security it had felt responsible for.
