Spiritual care is a vital part of medical/ nursing care for patients with serious illnesses. Numerous attempts have so far been made by scholars and practitioners to propose models of spiritual care. What seems to be lacking, however, is to examine these models in terms of psychotherapy. Although there are many similarities between spiritual care and psychotherapy, only few attempts have been made at comparing these disciplines. In this article, I would like to consider the clinical validity of spiritual care in view of psychotherapy, and improve models of spiritual care by applying psychotherapeutic knowledge. In particular, I focus on the purpose of spiritual care which determines the frame of care model. Through comparative analysis of spiritual care and psychotherapy, I reveal two points at issue. First, there is a possibility that spiritual care providers lead patients to a particular normative state. Second, there seems to be no attempt to connect the existential/subjective level and diagnostic/objective level in models of spiritual care. In conclusion, I suggest the necessity of relativizing the normativity of care models and investigating the reciprocity of the existential/subjective level and diagnostic/objective level.
