Description
The purpose of this essay is to examine the discourse on “Japan” in the East Asian History textbooks in today’s South Korean (ROK) schools. Critics have pointed out the nationalistic nature of the history education in today’s Japanese schools, which categorically separates the history of Japan from the rest of the world’s. The analysis of the East Asian history textbooks in South Korea in this paper provides insights into potential ways of overcoming such nationalistic perspective and reformulating new history textbooks informed by broader East Asian perspectives in Japan.
