The purpose of this study is to locate “ May 68” in the development of policies concerning citizenship education in France, and to clarify the logic that operated behind the revival of Civic education in the mid-1980s. In the devastated situation of school education at the time, a revival of Civic education, together with the knowledge and authority which had been degraded since “May 68”, was felt needed. This need for the knowledge and authority was rooted in the inherent logic of the French republicanism. This study shows that the rise of republicanism in the mid-80s was tied closely to a change in the industrial structure after the 60s; an American model of consumerist society gained force after “May 68”.
