A study on the grammar instruction in the communicative EFL pedagogy : the relevance of the notional/functional approach to the Courses of Study for lower secondary school

This paper aims at showing the importance of grammar instruction in developing the communicative competence of students in the lower secondary schools in EFL pedagogy. First this paper shows how grammar instruction has been treated in the ‘Courses of Study’ with the progression of communicative language teaching in our country. Secondly we find out how grammar instruction was discussed in 1970's and 80's when the Notional/Functional Approach (NFA) became the main stream EFL pedagogy in Europe and what the ‘ Courses of Study ’ learned from NFA . Lastly we suggest that grammar should be regarded as an independent entity which is not subject to language activities and that the organization of grammar should be reconstructed in terms of rich productivity and of discovery.
