Recently, due to the advance of treatments, it is said that evidence-based therapies for borderline personality disorder (BPD) have been developed and the supports for their families have been increasing. This paper reviewed the hypotheses of BPD mechanism(s) including family factors, and psychoeducational supports for them. First, researches of risk factors of BPD (genetics, trauma, family environments, etc.) were examined. Secondly, programs and effects of family psychoeducation (FPE) and family education (FE) were compared with each other. Considering the above two items and applying the FPE for Japanese Family, three viewpoints; “Family is Single and/or Multi?”, “Session of Family Members and/or including Patient”, and “Short term and/or Long term”, are needed to proceed more suitable family support program.
