Description
The aim of this research is to reconsider previous arguments on vertical and horizontal diversification in high school education in Japan and to orient research in this field in a direction that can address future needs. High school education in Japan is experiencing a situation featuring a large amount of vertical diversification and insufficient horizontal diversification. Educational policies aspiring to enhance vocational education or unify academic and vocational education are emerging; however, these kinds of policies were already implemented in the postwar period and have not achieved much. To avoid repeating the same situation, reconsidering the past arguments on these matters is important. This research focuses on both academic and vocational education, and reveals torsion between program and purpose in vocational education and general disciplines, as well as academic education and vocational disciplines. In this situation, sufficient empirical research considering the differences between fields in terms of horizontal and vertical diversification has not been done.
