The purpose of this research is to consider components, teaching methods, assessments in order to develop students' qualities and competencies, and to discuss the validity of the effects, in the lessons of "the meaning of work". This lesson was held for 7th grade students in the new teaching unit "hope (nozomi)", which was conducted only in this school due to research and development lead by MEXT. In this lesson, the researcher set a question, "why do people work ?", and had students reconsider their understanding of themselves and their attitude towards work. This research focused on the value of a visiting lecturer and the value of an activity where students created an original character to cheer them up. According to questionnaire and observing students' behavior, the result revealed that students were willing to think and behave actively. There was still some room for improvement to develop more effective teaching methods and self-evaluation.
