Description
This thesis analyses the previous research and key issues of non-marked passive sentences in Chinese. By investigating example sentences, it demonstrates that non-marked passive sentences of the transitive verb mean ‘neutrality’, while those of the intransitive verb mean ‘suffer’ or’ benefit’. The thesis analyses the characteristics of non-marked passive sentences in forms, discovering that the agent in non-marked passive sentences of the transitive verb can be omitted but that in non-marked passive sentences of the intransitive verb cannot. Meanwhile, non-marked passive sentences of the transitive verb can be changed into marked passive sentences and active sentences, while non-marked passive sentences of the intransitive verb cannot be changed. The thesis demonstrates that supplementary elements which show the influence on the patient is a prerequisite for composing non-marked passive sentences, and analyses various supplementary elements in detail.
