Teaching About Word Order of the Korean Adverb 잘 [tʃal]

Our goal in this paper is to focus on the adverb 잘 [tʃal] in order to reveal its characteristics and trends in use, based on corpus data. The results of our investigative analysis of 잘 [tʃal] in corpora led to an understanding of typical verb-modifying adverbs, their basic positions immediately preceding declinable words, and their range of movement within predicates. As the reasons for the removal of 잘 [tʃal] from the front of declinable words, we saw solid trends such as compound words, idiomatic usage, negative sentences, adnominal clauses, particle insertion for the sake of emphasis, and particle omission. The findings of this paper suggest more systematic and concrete ways of teaching the placement of adverbs in Korean word order than have existed to date.
