We conducted an anonymous self-report questionnaire survey to investigate nursing students’ awareness of moments of silence in conversations with patients and document students’ responses to silence. Over 60% of students reported feeling panic and confusion during the silence. The students who dislike the silence believed that silence led to a bad impression. They would panic, miss the meaning behind the silence, and were unable to pay attention to the patient in the silent situation. Therefore, they could not engage in adequate student-patient communication. The students who did not dislike the silence seemed to have more knowledge of the role of silence and more experience with intentional silence. Nearly all the students reported wanting to learn coping with silence skills; therefore, an effective training program in communication skills focusing the silence is needed for nursing education.
