Departmental Bulletin Paper Effects of Kampo Formulas on Differentiation and Proinflammatory Cytokines Expression of 3T3-L1 Cells

Effects of Kampo formulas which have been longused clinically for obese patients remain unclear atthe cellular level. The objective of this study is toinvestigate the effects of 8 commonly-used Kamposon the differentiation and proinflammatory cytokinesexpression of 3T3-L1 cells. 3T3-L1 preadipocyteswere induced differentiation being treated with test8 Kampos through the induction period. Oil red Ostaining and mRNAs expressions of peroxisome proliferator-active receptor-γ (PPARγ) and adiponectinwere examined to evaluate effects of the Kamposon the differentiation. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α), interleukin-6, and monocyte chemoattractantprotein-1 (MCP-1) mRNAs were examined toinvestigate the anti-inflammatory effects of the Kampos.PPARγ and/or adiponectin, as well as MCP-1and/or TNF-α mRNAs were significantly decreasedby Boiogito and a few other Kampos when comparedwith the control. These results at the cellularlevel are compatible with the clinical beneficial effectsof these Kampos.
