This study aims to clarify contemporary aspects of high school art (crafts production) by analyzing the position of design. To investigate the changes of the National Curriculum Guidelines, contents of the guidelines that have been passed through revisions seven times were compared with each other. As a result of the comparison about the guidelines, it was revealed that the description about the design in the contents have gradually decreased. Then, authorized textbooks that had been published during the same timeframe were collected and analyzed. The textbooks are classified into three periods. I was able to categorize all teaching material into four types. As a result of the textbook analysis, it was revealed that the teaching materials published about design have gradually decreased. However, the teaching materials about traditional crafts, crafts production, and craft theory have increased. In conclusion, high school art (crafts production) is gradually increasing the independence of the educational subject, it is still important that such efforts.
