Preparation and characteristics of Sr2MgSi2O7: Eu2+ phosphors

Sr2MgSi2O7 (SMS): Eu2+ phosphors were prepared by the solid-state reaction and heating at various temperatures in a reducing atmos-phere. Effects of heating temperature and co-dopants on the crystal phases, luminescence spectra and afterglow properties were studied. X-ray diffraction results showed that SMS crystals are formed above 1200 °C via α'-Sr2SiO4.The Eu3+ emission peaks such as at 613 nm disappeared and the Eu2+ broad peaks at around 470 nm as well as 550 nm due to Sr2SiO4 appeared when heated at 1000 °C. The phosphors prepared above 1200 °C showed the blue afterglow of SMS: Eu2+, which increased with addition of co-dopants such as Nd, Ho, and in particular, Dy.
