Influence of Laminate Configuration for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic on Mechanical Properties

This paper describes the effect of the cross-ply and angle-ply lamination configuration for carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) plates on the mechanical properties. The measured mechanical properties were the tensile stress, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and stress intensity factor. For the cross-ply laminated plate, the tensile stress decreased significantly as the fiber angle was increased from 0 to 45°. However, for the angle-ply plate, there was no dependence of the tensile stress on the fiber angle. Moreover, for the cross-ply plate, the stress intensity factor decreased with increasing fiber angle. On the other hand, for the angle-ply plate, the stress intensity factor was independent of the fiber angle in the ranges between 0° to 45°, except for a decrease at 22.5°. Consequently, the results of this study indicated that the mechanical properties of the angle-ply laminated plate were largely unaffected by the fiber angle.
