Description
[ABSTRACT] The purpose of this study is to clarify the influence of the relationship with community residents upon children with developmental disorders and their families during disasters. The research design is descriptive qualitative research that analyzes 18 articles, documenting experiences of how the relationships formed with community residents during disasters and those maintained with them from before the occurrence of a disaster, influenced children with developmental disorders and their families. The results indicated ten categories of influence of relationships formed during disasters and nine categories of influence of relationships that had been maintained from before the occurrence of the disaster. The features of the influence can be thought of as being: “the raising stability of children with developmental disorders and their family stemming from their daily association with community residents, and the risk of breakdowns in relationships during disasters”; “the demonstration and discovery of children’s strengths stemming from opportunities to spend time with numerous people to guard their lives, and the loss of such opportunities through isolation, exclusion, and resignation”; “contrary influence by not being rewarded, even though family has tried to gain understanding and support”; and “the stability by mutual support, and feelings of indebtedness due to having received support.” These suggest that for the empowerment of children with developmental disabilities and their families who are faced with circumstances of isolation and resignation, there is need for the kind of support that strengthens their resilience in the face of the stress generated in dealing with community residents and for the support aimed at building relationships of mutual help.
