Description
Totem poles and Inuksuit(sg.inuksuk)are seen as one of the representative arts of the aboriginal people of the North America. But these monuments(and other native crafts)were not"arts" but just simple "tools" with a certain function. Then, when and what conditions did these "tools" become "arts"? This theme has already been discussed in various contexts, however, those studies carefully avoided the perspectives of the formative and technological dimensions. Re-evaluating Franz Boas' classic, Primitive Art, this article aims to explore the conditions in which such "tools" become "arts" through the perspectives of the formative and technological dimensions.
