This study aimed at evaluating the influence on the states of mental health and physical fitness caused by differences in sleep times and sleep sufficiency among primary schoolchildren. The total number of 132 school children at the 5th and the 6th grade in the A-elementary school, Sapporo city was studied. A questionnaire investigation evaluating the state of mental health and life style was conducted in June, 2014. The physical fitness test established by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan was used. An evaluation of the state of sleep time and sleep sufficiency was also recorded. As a result, the children with sufficient sleep time showed a lower score of four positive criteria for mental health and a higher grade of physical fitness. Further, the children with sleep time for more than 9 hours during week-end demonstrated a lower score of four positive criteria for mental health. Thus, this study indicates that ensuring sufficient sleep time not only daily life but also during weekend contributes to the state of mental health and physical fitness among elementary schoolchildren.
