It is well known that exercise performance declines or exhaustion point is reached when exercise is continuously or repetitively performed. Although many people assume that a decline of performance or exhaustion is equivalent to muscle fatigue, muscle fatigue occurs even though exercise performance does not actually decline. Of course, there is no doubt that muscle fatigue is responsible for a decline of exercise performance or exhaustion. Many physiologists and sports scientists have been interested in mechanisms of muscle fatigue over 100 years. In traditional studies on muscle fatigue, definition of muscle fatigue has been established. However, recent studies have reported that a declined performance or exhaustion does not necessarily occur in keeping with the traditional definition of muscle fatigue. Therefore, it is likely that muscle fatigue can not be explained by the traditional definition of muscle fatigue. Firstly, this article reviews some previous studies on muscle fatigue and exhibits the traditional definition of muscle fatigue. Secondly, traditional classification of muscle fatigue into peripheral and central fatigue is discussed and recent studies by the author on muscle fatigue not related to peripheral or central fatigue are reviewed. Finally, this article proposes new definition of muscle fatigue based on the recent studies on muscle fatigue.
