Fluent reading is a crucial skill for modern-day life and education. On the other hand, there are people who suffer from reading difficulties, such as developmental dyslexia, who await clarification of causes and effective intervention methods. To deal with this issue, the present article will first introduce studies regarding early stages of visual word processing in expert readers, in order to provide insights into psychological/neural correlates of fluent reading. Secondly, causes and interventions of developmental dyslexia will be discussed on the basis of experimental findings introduced. Finally, the article will propose roles of experimental and clinical studies, and necessity of their interaction for further progress in researches on reading and developmental dyslexia
